Stop Stuttering the Hypnotic Way

Stuttering is a problem that affects many people, and there are many forms of therapy designed to help stutterers to speak clearly and fluently. By working with the subconscious mind, clinical hypnotherapy can help stutterers improve their speech, and can get results more quickly and easily than some other methods.

When you want to say something, you just decide what you want to say, and just say it, right? Well, not quite. While your conscious mind decides what you are going to say, your subconscious is responsible for coordinating the actions of the lungs, larynx, mouth and tongue that produce sound in a way that becomes fluent speech. For the stutterer, there is nothing wrong with their lungs, larynx, mouth or tongue, but there is a problem with how the subconscious is coordinating the actions of these components to produce speech.

It is interesting to observe that when a stutterer speaks while they are in hypnosis, their speech is fluent, proving that they are perfectly capable of speaking fluently, but that for some reason the subconscious mind has learned to stutter in the waking state. And as the subconscious has learned to stutter, through hypnotherapy the subconscious mind can be taught to speak fluently and clearly instead.

In the hypnotherapy clinic, treatment for stuttering has three main components. Firstly, any unresolved event or experience that lies at the origin of the stuttering needs to be resolved. Not everyone develops a stutter in response to some past event, but if there is some underlying event, therapy needs to take place to educate the subconscious that stuttering is no longer a suitable way of responding to the event.

Secondly, for most stutterers the very presence of a speech impediment will have affected how they interact with other people, and will have affected their confidence and self esteem. Sometimes a loss of confidence for some reason may contribute to the stutter developing; the development of a stutter will almost certainly contribute to a loss of confidence. And the more anxious a person becomes about their stutter, the worse the stutter gets. So building up the stutterer's confidence and self esteem is an important step in overcoming a stutter, giving them confidence in their interactions with other people, and most importantly, giving them confidence that they have the ability to learn to speak clearly and fluently.

Thirdly, the mechanics of speaking clearly and fluently can be addressed by giving suggestions to the subconscious mind about how to speak clearly, teaching the subconscious how to use the lungs, larynx, mouth and tongue in a way that results in flawless speech.

Clinical hypnotherapy can help people of almost any age to learn to speak fluently, though for very young children the normal hypnotherapy constraints apply. To be able to go into hypnosis, the client needs to be able to concentrate their attention on something for a period of time and young children are often too easily distracted for the process of guiding them into hypnosis to be successful. It is sometimes considered that children under the age of 6 or 7 make poor subjects for hypnotherapy, but this isn't always the case - some children as young as 4 years old have been successfully treated in the hypnotherapy clinic.
